First spring body robot
|
We’ve been impressed by iRobot’s Looj robot that cleans up gutters to keep them clean, now it’s time to appreciate the developers of a robot that can inspect gas pipes from within. The robot, a collective outcome of Osaka Gas Co. and Osaka University, is designed specifically to travel freely through gas pipes, inspect them and send back images of blockages and other problems, doing all the tasks which are done presently by digging up roads. The robot is made in a “spindle-shaped spring body formed by a spiral of stainless steel, combined with a small motor and tires.” Measuring about 1m long and about 17cms in width, the robot, which gains momentum to move forward in the gas pipes by pushing its spiral body against the walls of the pipes, would definitely minimize problems caused by worn-out gas pipes and gas leakage in transportation.
